HWL launches 'Knowledge Quest' programme to help
enhance students' general knowledge

(Hong Kong, 19 July 2005) In keeping with its corporate culture of community giving and in support of Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB)'s initiative to widen the perspective of our students and promote the implementation of Liberal Studies in schools, Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL) will launch a 'Knowledge Quest' programme to invite secondary school students to visit its diverse operations and help enhance their general knowledge. These include container terminals, hotels, retail stores, and power plant.

Through working with EMB, HWL will arrange students to see for themselves the day-to-day operations of various business activities such as container handling, housekeeping chores at hotels, state-of-the-art purifying systems and biological filters featured in the fresh fish center, centralized fresh food distribution logistics, power generation process, etc, on the guided tours.

"Liberal education is an integral part of knowledge acquisition and learning for young people. As a corporate citizen, HWL feels that it can play a role in helping students develop a better understanding of the world around them," Mrs Susan Chow, HWL's Deputy Group Managing Director said.

"With this in mind, this initiative is intended to give students a first-hand experience of seeing behind-the-scene operations that involve services familiar to them. We hope the students can acquire a better general knowledge and be inspired by what they see."

During the summer holidays, the programme will extend to include students with different abilities and special needs through the help of TREATS, a social welfare organization that promotes integration of people with different backgrounds.

The student visit programme is intended to be an ongoing activity on the Group and its subsidiaries' corporate social responsibility calendar.

In tandem with the launch of Knowledge Quest programme, HWL has also taken part in EMB's School-Business Partnership Programme, which aims at providing opportunities for senior high school students to understand different career requirements and recruitment expectation from the commercial sector.

Schools which are interested in joining these visits are welcome to contact EMB's Careers Guidance & Home-School Cooperation Section at 2639 4711 or Mr K F Yeung, Senior School Development Officer at 2863 4754 / 2639 4701 for further details.
