Partnership Will Reach up to Two Million Home Pass
(Hong Kong - 27 January 2005) Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting Limited ("Galaxy") and Hutchison Global Communications Limited ("HGC") today signed a cooperation agreement to deliver Galaxy's pay TV service, leveraging HGC's broadband network in Hong Kong. The new agreement will enhance both companies' competitive edges in bringing completely innovative infotainment services to customers.
The cooperation will maximize the synergies of the two companies. HGC owns and operates the largest fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) telecommunications network in Hong Kong. The network, with unlimited bandwidth scalability, has direct access to over 4,000 residential buildings and covers a total of 1.2 million home pass in major districts. Leveraging the optical fibre network, HGC offers quality fixed-line telephone and broadband Internet access services. Galaxy, currently reaches 600,000 homes, is now delivering a vast variety of local and international programmes through 34 pay-TV channels. Under this cooperation, the two companies will join forces in cross selling and delivering unparalleled infotainment experiences to customers through a top-notch broadband network. The move will also accelerate the development of the local pay TV market.
Jackey Chan, Chief Operating Officer of Galaxy said in the ceremony, "This cooperation marks a major milestone for HGC and Galaxy in both our future business development. At present, Galaxy's network has already covered 600,000 homes in Hong Kong while HGC's has covered 1.2 million FTTB homes. Both companies will further expand their networks and Galaxy's total coverage will further substantially grow to 2 million homes towards the end of the year. The introduction of the broadband delivery mode will directly benefit our future business development as it will greatly reduce our investment cost and time on network building."
Peter Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HGC said, "All along, our business focus has been to position HGC as a significant network provider. In delivering innovative on-line applications and content to our customers, we always partner with leading service providers. The cooperation with Galaxy demonstrates this. Through this partnership, the potential of our optical fibre network can be completely unleashed. We shall work closely together to expand our markets, and to bring exciting pay TV programmes to our viewers."
HGC has long been an innovator in Hong Kong, becoming the first telecommunications operator in the territory to introduce 10Mbps* symmetrical broadband service as early as 2000. This service supports the development of broadband TV, and continues to facilitate the expansion of service scope and market size.
New services will be launched in the market in the second quarter of 2005. The two companies will offer customers bundled service packages incorporating Galaxy's pay TV services and HGC's broadband services. Subscribers will simply install a set-top box with HGC's broadband connectivity to enjoy Galaxy's TV programmes. The two companies will also cooperate in delivering quality customer services and technical support.
