Press Release
establishing international Ethernet network
A breakthrough for Hong Kong-Taiwan Communications
Hong Kong, 5 October 2004 - Hutchison Global Communications ("HGC") and Taiwan Fixed Network Co. Ltd ("TFN") announced today the joint establishment of an international Ethernet network connecting Hong Kong and Taiwan. This network will provide multipoint-to-multipoint trans-geographical data services to customers in the two markets.
Following the successful launch of the world's first international Ethernet network with KT Corporation of South Korea in March this year, HGC took a step further to extend this service to Taiwan. This initiative, also powered by inter-Autonomous system and Virtual Private LAN Service ("VPLS") technology, not only affirms HGC's leading role in launching international Ethernet network but also enhances the company's business expansion in Asia.
Peter Wong, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Global Communications Holdings Limited ("HGCH"), and Fan Shui Wing, General Manager of TFN, today jointly hosted a signing ceremony in Taipei. HGC intends to capitalise on TFN's advanced network, experience and solid customer base to roll out the new service. This cost-effective and easy-to-operate Ethernet-based solution provides multipoint-to-multipoint connectivity for customers with branches of operations located in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
HGCH Chief Executive Officer Peter Wong states, "Communications connectivity between Hong Kong and Taiwan has further been enhanced, thanks to the advancement in international Ethernet technology. This innovative service with low-building cost allows enterprises to communicate in a superb convenient environment at high speed. The new service can also deal with fast-growing communications and commercial activities across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Subsequent to our co-operation with KT Corporation, we once again demonstrate our capabilities, technical know-how and foresight in spearheading international Ethernet-based communications trends through our co-operation with Taiwan Fixed Network."
Fan Shui Wing, General Manager of Taiwan Fixed Network, said, "The co-operation between TFN and HGC underscores our success in taking Ethernet technology to the international horizon. The breakthrough not only provides enterprises with a new option in trans-geographical communications, but also strengthens our company's expertise and leadership in the telecommunications field. During the initial phase, we will focus on offering this service to Taiwanese corporations operating across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Partnerships with heavyweight international telecommunications players to roll out the same in Europe and the USA will follow. We will also tailor make the broadband services to satisfy the international telecommunications needs of individual enterprises at competitive prices."
With the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement taking effect, HGC believes more Taiwanese businessmen will utilise Hong Kong as a platform to penetrate mainland China market. Commercial and industrial activities between mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan will be boosted. This will directly drive more demand for Hong Kong-Taiwan communications services. The Hong Kong-Taiwan Ethernet network will provide effective communication support for enterprises and industrialists travelling between Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Ethernet has many distinct advantages. Owing to its simple-to-use feature, flexibility in design and low-cost system operation, Ethernet has been widely deployed by network operators. In addition to its ability of supporting various communications protocols, an Ethernet network can be deployed to replace cross-regional WANs, helping enterprises save the costs of installing such hardware as routers. Furthermore, it operates as a "plug-and-use" communications solution for user-enterprises. The HGC-TFN cooperation will be officially in place by end-October.

About International Ethernet Network Service
Ethernet is currently one of the most popular network technologies with the widest scope of application. It is a LAN technology, which is commonly used in the commercial field.
HGC's International Ethernet Network service is a network service that builds on Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) to support multipoint-to-multipoint communications. Since Ethernet and LAN are of an identical technology protocol, users can use just a switch for connectivity without investing too much in routers or private lines interface. Cost-effectiveness and convenience are in fact the beauty of this service.
Furthermore, enterprises can enjoy high convenience in connecting with the LAN system at any time by Ethernet, fast-Ethernet as well as Gigabit Ethernet interfaces in accordance with their practical needs. In addition, enterprises can utilise Layer 2 Ethernet service for total network control.
The bandwidth of an international Ethernet network can expand at 1 Mbps intervals from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Therefore, it offers great flexibility to meet the needs of individual enterprises. Furthermore, the multipoint-to-multipoint communications mode provides a fully meshed network which is more direct, easier and faster than other conventional connectivity methods, particularly fulfilling the needs of cost-sensitive enterprise users who demand for quality and stable network services.
